How Ranken Jordan created a summer camp for kids with complex medical needs
by Kristin LaRose, Chief Nursing Officer | August 4, 2025 | Patient Care & Innovation | 0 Comments
At Ranken Jordan, we strive to ensure our patients don’t miss out on rites of passage in childhood. Whether it’s swimming, trying a new sport, or telling Santa what they want for Christmas, we believe kids should be kids whether they’re in the hospital or not. That’s why we tried something new this year: a summer camp called Adventure ReimagineED. To the best of our knowledge, our camp is the only in-hospital camp in our region that invites children with complex medical issues and their siblings.
Yeva’s story: How Ranken Jordan helped a Ukrainian refugee following a tragic accident in Kansas
by Dr. Nick Holekamp, Chief Medical Officer | Jul 1, 2024
I’ve met more than 2,000 children and their families during my more than 24 years at Ranken Jordan, and I could write countless blog posts about the incredible people I’ve met here. But one family in particular stands out to me this month: the story of 8-year-old Yeva and her parents who came to Ranken Jordan after the unimaginable happened.
Ranken Jordan’s commitment to the future of pediatric medicine
by Dr. Nick Holekamp, Chief Medical Officer | May 7, 2024
May is graduation season and that always makes me think about one of the best parts of my job: teaching medical students and residents about Ranken Jordan and pediatric complex care.
Creating more play space and a permanent home for OZ
by Dr. Nick Holekamp, Chief Medical Officer | Apr 9, 2024
This month we are starting renovations to create a permanent space for our innovative OZ program, as well as additional play space and other updates for our patients. We’re committing $1.4 million to this project, so it’s an example of our dedication to Care Beyond the Bedside, our unique care model that prioritizes play as a form of healing. Our renovation plan is big news for us, so I wanted to share more about what we’re doing and why. If you’re interested in getting involved, you can donate or volunteer to support our cause.
4 ways our latest research has impacted Ranken Jordan
by Dr. Nick Holekamp, Chief Medical Officer | Mar 5, 2024
In 2021, we launched a time-motion study to track the whereabouts and activities of our patients, an important first step in reversing the trend that a long hospital stay can put a child more at risk for developmental delay. It was the first study of its kind and our initial results were published in the peer-reviewed Child: Care, Health & Development. (Read more about the research in this blog post.) While having a published paper is an important step in our mission to encourage more research around children with complex medical conditions, the study and our findings have impacted our hospital in even more ways than we anticipated.
Why we’re hiring people to play with our patients
by Dr. Nick Holekamp, Chief Medical Officer | Jan 15, 2024
Last year we started hiring for what has quickly become one of the best jobs around: a Patient Play Associate (PPA), a new, paid position dedicated to playing with kids at Ranken Jordan. To the best of my knowledge, we’re the first hospital to create a job like this. While certain types of play are used by Occupational Therapists, Child Life Specialists and other therapy professionals to achieve certain medical outcomes, our PPA position is solely focused on allowing our kids to do what they love most: to play just for fun.
The importance of family connection this holiday season, even in the hospital
by Dr. Nick Holekamp, Chief Medical Officer | Dec 18, 2023
For the majority of us, the holiday season means time at home with family. But for our patients with complex medical conditions, most cannot go home to celebrate. That’s why at this time of year, I always think about the importance of family togetherness. Family time is critical for a child’s development and the truth is the healthcare industry can do a lot to improve family connection when a loved one is in the hospital.
Why we should all be thankful for OZ this year
by Dr. Nick Holekamp, Chief Medical Officer | Nov 20, 2023
For most young children, organized, educational programs like preschool are a given. But that’s not true for children with complex medical conditions–a fact that can have a drastic impact on a child’s development. That’s why we created OZ, short for Optimization Zone, an innovative in-hospital program, similar to a preschool, for medically complex kids age 5 and younger.
Are hospitals stimulating enough for young patients? What our new research suggests
by Dr. Nick Holekamp, Chief Medical Officer | Oct 31, 2023
No parent plans for their child to be in the hospital, especially for a prolonged period of time. But for parents of kids aged 0-5 who face this reality, I know there’s something they worry about: a long hospital stay can put a child more at risk for developmental delay. In an important first step in reversing this trend, my team and I at Ranken Jordan launched a time-motion study in 2021 to track the whereabouts and activities of our patients.

In May 2023, I was lucky enough to do a TEDx Talk for TEDxStLouis. I wanted to do it because my team and I at Ranken Jordan are on a mission to change how the healthcare community treats children with complex medical needs.
